Duvetcher, native to Europe, temperate Asia and North Africa, is an herbaceous plant.

It is more commonly called earth smoke, earth gall, jaundice grass, earth flower or even widow grass. It gets its name from the fact that the sap of the earth smoke will make you water as if you were getting smoke in your eyes. Moreover, the grayish and finely chopped leaves look like smoke coming from the ground.

It has been used since ancient times and was even prescribed by Galen and Pliny.

Fumaria is rich in alkaloids, including protopine.
