Side effects: Methyl folate may reduce the plasma levels of certain antiepileptic drugs (phenytoin, carbamazepine, primidone or valproic acid). Theoretically, methyl folate can trigger a bipolar episode; caution with bipolar patients. Interactions. Patients taking certain drugs that may lower folates (anticonvulsants, cholestyramine, colestipol, cycloserine, aminopterin, methotrexate, trimethoprim, isotretinoin, fluoxetine, NSAIDs, methylprednisolone, pentamidine), or who smoke or drink excessively require higher doses of L -methylfolate.
